As the New York leg of Fashion Month wraps up, and we ready ourselves for a busy few weeks across London, Milan and Paris, breakout trends have already begun to punctuate the Spring/Summer 2024 shows.

Bringing a world of fresh fashion—from new emerging talent and veterans evolving their signatures—the runways gave way to plenty of season-defying moments we’ll be running towards in the warmer months. But as with any fashion week, there are always the key styles that come up more than others, giving us a clue as to what we can expect to see everywhere in no time. Sheer looks that have dominated collections over the past few seasons were back, along with retro leathers and micro hemlines, but there were also a few fresh bits and pieces that are clearly on the rise.

Ahead, the six biggest NYFW trends we’re tipping to be huge beyond fashion month.

Bubbling Up

Just when you thought the last of Y2K paraphernalia had come and gone, bubble hems make a surprisingly chic comeback. Spotted in all forms—low-slung skirts at Staud, bulbous dresses at Altuzarra, and bouncy minis at Dion Lee and Tory Burch—airy bubble hems are sure to be everywhere come summer.

Short Cut

We may have dismissed the controversial capri pant as nothing more than a headline-grabbing outfit choice with no real legs (get it?), but we’ve come around on these crops. Expertly styled at 3.1 Phillip Lim, Sandy Liang and Carolina Herrera in ways that could suit any sense of style, capri pants are the trend to sort the daring from the ones that play it safe.

Going Out Skirts

The ‘Going Out Top’ has served us well. But this season, we’re focusing on bottoms. Whether it’s a sheer number with sparkly embroidery, packed full of sequins or covered in tassels, a show-stopping midi skirt paired with a modest knit or t-shirt is the new ‘It’ girl summer uniform.

Catch of the Night

Mesh has featured prominently in the trend cycle as of late, but this season, it’s getting a glitzy rework. Seen at Proenza Schouler, Gabriela Hearst, Ralph Lauren, Prabal Gurung, Staud, and more, beaded netting is the perfect show-stopper for a warm night out.

Scarlet Fever

Every season, a hero colour emerges. For Spring/Summer 2024, there were sprinkles of lilac, pale blue and marigold yellow, but none stood out quite like the burning scarlet hue that dominated collections.

Flat-tering Footwear

Fashion hasn’t always favoured the practical. But a substantial amount of shoes swapped out the sky-high platforms of last season for more functional footwear. Between the Mary Janes at Sandy Liang, the futuristic mules at Tory Burch and the dressy pointed flats at Coach, the ballet flat trend is evolving to keep us on our toes.
