Given the dominance of outrageously chunky sneakers and embellished cowboy boots in the fashionable footwear arena of late, this wasn’t a shoe look we saw coming – and yet, Karl Lagerfeld’s fresh spin on the Mary Jane has us rethinking our approach to everyday summer kicks.

The Mary-Jane shoes that featured in his Chanel Cruise 2018-19 runway show, showcased in front of a replica of the Duke of Westminster’s yacht which Coco Chanel regularly sailed on, weren’t the first time he’s reworked the classic style for a big-scale collection.

But this was the first time he’d reimagined Mademoiselle Coco’s signature footwear style as “children’s party shoes”, perched on a tiny 33mm heel and embellished with white and silver leather and even, in one case, dotted with sequins.

There’s even a new-look, open-topped ‘sneaker’ variety with a rubber sole that’s the closest this new offering comes to the ‘daggy ‘80s’ essence that’s ruling the street shoe world right now.

If you’re ready to dip your toe into the fresh Mary-Jane trend then shop now and style, as Coco did, with one of this season’s hottest midi-skirts. What could be more festive come Christmas party season than sequinned white Mary-Janes?

The new-look shoe styles drop into stores as part of the Chanel Cruise 2018-19 collection globally this month, with prices starting at $1200 for the silver or white goatskin pairs. See here for more details.
