Katie Holmes is a fixture on red carpets, always bringing her elegant style to glitzy occasions, but we all know it’s her day-to-day streetwear that really gets people talking. And with her latest outing, the actress proves she has the power to make us reconsider the previously inconsiderable: the return of the wedge.

Stepping out in the New York neighbourhood of NoHo, the 44-year-old was the epitome of casual cool in pale blue t-shirt tucked into relaxed, high-waisted jeans that were cinched at the waist with a brown leather belt. She opted for retro accessories in cat-eye sunglasses, a raffia crossbody bag with a knotted leather strap, and navy and beige cross-over wedge heels.

After some time away, the throwback footwear is wedging its way back into the trend cycle, and if Holmes‘ stamp of approval is anything to go by, we have a feeling that this is just the beginning of the shoe’s renaissance.

Thanks to sleek iterations by Bottega Veneta, Christopher Esber and Paris Texas, wedges have been on the rise as the footwear choice of plenty of trendsetters. While Katie Holmes went for a ’70s woven style, we’ve seen ’90s minimalist silhouettes being endorsed by Alexa Chung and Camille Charrière.

Meanwhile, at Alaïa, Prada and Magda Butrym, the wedge has taken on sculptural shapes, proving the modern capabilities of this once ‘Sunday Brunch’ staple. And, of course, who could forget Loewe‘s balloon heels and clog wedges.

The beauty of the wedge is that, like the ballet flat, you really can find a style to suit anyone. Though the paired-back styles are a great way to dabble with the style—they tend to just look like regular stilettos at a glace with 10x the comfort—Holmes certainly makes an alluring case for a more vintage aesthetic.
