After MySpace and Facebook but before the days of Instagram monetisation and algorithms, Camille Charriere found a creative outlet through a secret fashion blog dubbed Camille Over The Rainbow in 2010. Like many bloggers of the early ’10s, she eventually and successfully transformed her editorial content into an aesthetically pleasing Instagram grid. Thus giving birth to the perennial ‘influencer’.

She now boasts over 1.2 million followers on the photo-sharing platform and collaborates with the likes of Miu Miu, Maison Valentino and even attended dinner with the Donatella Versace. Amid her carefully curated Instagram grid, today she published a lengthy disclaimer about the unspoken aspects of working in the fashion industry.

“Sharing the small print because i don’t take the time to address these issues very often but do think its important to be transparent every now & then (sic),” she wrote in the caption. “This is not to justify myself; simply to remind all of you who found me on here where i come from, as i realise you may not know.”

In a statement that was originally published to her Instagram story, she mentioned a P.S. that many of the pieces seen on her account are borrowed, gifted or purchased using a press discount. She went on to reference English influencer Molly-Mae Hague who infamously said that “we all have the same 24 hours in the day”.

“We don’t,” she wrote. “[I] am all too aware that we don’t start off on the same playing field… White privilege is real. That said: I don’t come from money.” She explained that her father is an engineer and mother, a teacher. Charriere also noted that a stable and “loving home” had given her a head start but her parents never paid her way and that her wedding was split between the influencer and husband.

It comes after a string of negative comments on social media when a hilarious TikTok video went viral on a recent Miu Miu ski suit she was seen wearing. The content creator behind the post is seen searching the look which retails for over $5,000 before saying, “Oh, we’re in a different tax bracket.”

The influencer shared a DM she received following reposting the TikTok which said, “You proud of that?” To preface, the garments were borrowed.
