Kim Kardashian has had some iconic moments on the Met Gala red carpet. From her inaugural debut with Kanye West in a controversial floral Givenchy ensemble, to the wet-look corset dress by Jean Paul Gaultier that riled fans up, the reality star understands that the Met is not the place to shy away from risk.
This year, she wowed in custom Schiaparelli. Designed by the brand’s creative director Daniel Roseberry, the look consisted of a nude corset bodysuit with layers upon layers of draped pearls and diamonds that paid homage to Karl Lagerfeld‘s signature designs.
Crafted from 50,000 freshwater pearls and 16,000 crystals, it took a dozen artisans over 1,000 hours of work to render.
When asked about the inspiration behind her outfit choice—which sparked comparisons to her 2007 Playboy cover—the mogul told Vogue, “What is more Karl? The iconic Chanel pearls is what I always thought of, so we wanted to just be dripping in pearls.”
But with all that intricate work, came a lot of maintenance. And by the end of the night, Kardashian’s look had come undone.
As she returned to her hotel after the extravaganza, several pearl strands appeared to have snapped, sending the rare gems spilling around the New York City streets. Though the look appeared to remain intact while she walked the carpet for photos, she told an outlet that she’d been struggling with the delicate nature of the style.
“Some [pearls] popped on the way,” she revealed during the live-streamed interviews. “I told my daughter to grab them all. They’re real pearls, and she was putting them all in her purse.”
