Following Dior’s Men’s Spring/Summer 2022 presentation last month, Peter Philips told GRAZIA that once the masks come off post-pandemic, we would “play” with makeup once again. Trendsetter Gigi Hadid has been ahead of the kerb for sometime now, proving Philip’s notion to be true (on the eyes nonetheless) by debuting a number of colourful eye looks in recent months.
Remember that tangerine eyeshadow? Well, the model has gone one better today with a negative eye in pine green that’s so easy you could try it yourself. Hadid took to Instagram after she visited world-renowned interior designer Ken Fulk. (Of course she was impeccably dressed in a head-to-toe cream ensemble, but it was her eyes – oh her eyes – that we couldn’t stop looking at.)
The mastery was courtesy of makeup artist Carolina Gonzalez and is reminiscent of a look Hadid wore as she walked the Chanel Spring 2020 Couture runway. Yes, the negative nail colour trend has peaked and seeped into our everyday lives, but could we now see this take on the negative eye on someone who is not Lucy Boynton our morning coffee run?
In June, 26-year-old Hadid took to Instagram wearing a vibrant pop of orange on the inner corner of her eyes. That look was courtesy of Patrick Ta and another easy experiment for those of us who wear one makeup look every weekend. Yes, guilty as charged.
Blue eye makeup has seen a major resurgence in recent weeks too (not the dance recital kind though). At the Fall 2022 Haute Couture shows we saw an array of chalky blues and thick kohl eyeliner. Jean Paul Gaultier is even leading the return of face art.
Hadid’s makeup look is not the only reason she made headlines this week. The model is soon to make her television debut as a voice actor. She will replace Chrissy Teigen as the narrator for Netflix drama, Never Have I Ever. The television personality was practically cancelled by much of the industry over buried tweets and online bullying.
If you’re still in two mind frames about trialling this look – or even re-merging into then post-pandemic world with makeup – we’re all about it. Helen Mirren is too. In fact, she didn’t ever stop doing a full face of makeup during lockdown. Bless.
