Whether we are escaping the mundanity of our restricted lives or the messiness of our social media feeds, a woman’s nighttime routine has become a much-needed tool to disconnect and relax. In this series “How I Wind Down…”, we speak to a lot of different women about how they prepare for a restful evening.

Through lockdown it feels like we live vicariously through our social media; the ultimate ‘infinite scroll’. For digital influencer and entrepreneur Elle Ferguson, she has built an impressive resumé through the online platform and over time has amassed a huge 685,000 followers. This month however Ferguson has swapped her iPhone for the Fujifilm instax mini LiPlay camera (a tangible reminder to observe what is around us, rather than what is happening online).

As such, it only made sense for the fashion and beauty expert to join this important series. How does someone who works almost constantly online, switch off?

GRAZIA: Can you describe your nighttime beauty routine?

“My nighttime beauty routine is simple yet effective. It’s all about hydration and achieving that healthy golden glow. First, I remove all my makeup so I have super clean skin. I use The GoTo oil cleanser before I get in the shower. Then once I’m in the shower I use the Natasha Cooke Cream Cleanser to remove any leftover makeup. When I get out of the shower, I always splash cold water on my face. Before I go to bed I love to apply a fresh layer of Elle Effect ‘The Tan’ on my face. I use The Application Mitt to ensure it’s blended all the way down my neck. I then sleep in that and rinse in the morning.”

How do you wind down after a busy day?

“I LOVE my treadmill – it’s an hour of pure me time. If I have had a huge day and need to shake the day off I jump on the treadmill for an hour and run the day out. It clears my head and makes me feel good. After that I have a super hot shower and a Hydralyte and I’m ready for dinner and bed.”

How do you decorate your space to assist in falling asleep?

“I love candles and photos. Especially in lockdown, my house is surrounded by prints of past travels and special occasions that I’ve printed with my instax mini LiPlay instant camera. I think it assists in drifting off into a peaceful sleep state because you remember all the good times.”

What time do you go to sleep?

“I’m definitely a night owl. I would love to say 9 pm but due to a lot of our manufacturing being done overseas, I’m not usually in bed before 12:30-1:00 am, which I’m trying to change.”

Do you plan the next day’s look the night before or in the morning? If so, what’s your go-to look for an easy morning the next day?

“One of my favourite things is to mentally go through my wardrobe the night before and style outfits. It’s so much FUN! My go to outfit would be a  white shirt, denim, great shoes and a statement handbag.”
