Many people raised eyebrows in 2021 when it was revealed that Disney and 20th Century Fox would move forward with the new mystery film, Death on the Nile. The film companies faced backlash after the now-disgraced actor Armie Hammer – who will star in the forthcoming movie – was accused of sexual assault and cannibalism in January.

The trailer was released overnight but to some surprise, Disney seemed to deliberately snub the actor from nearly every second of the two minute teaser. Hammer stars alongside lead actress Gal Gadot but in nearly every shot of the two together, he is quickly cut. The actor receives about one second of fame towards the end of the trailer where he says, “you are mad”.

So, er, that’s about it.

The film is slated to release into theatres from February 10, 2022. Death on the Nile is adapted from the 1937 Agatha Christie novel of the same name. The mystery-thriller follows a Belgian sleuth Hercule Poirot’s Egyptian vacation aboard a glamorous river steamer. It turns into a terrifying search for a murderer when a picture-perfect couple’s idyllic honeymoon is tragically cut short.

Following accusations of cannibalism on Twitter in January, Hammer became the subject of an LAPD sexual assault case in March after evidence was submitted by a woman, Effie, who claimed she was assaulted by the man in 2017.

“On April 24th, 2017, Armie Hammer violently raped me for over four hours in Los Angeles, during which he repeatedly slammed my head against a wall, bruising my face,” Effie said in a statement at the time. “He also committed other acts of violence against me to which I did not consent. For example, he beat my feet with a crop so they would hurt with every step I took for the next week. During those four hours, I tried to get away but he wouldn’t let me. I thought that he was going to kill me. He then left with no concern for my wellbeing.”

The results of that case is unknown. Hammer was discharged from a treatment centre last month.
