Though Cassie can be a controversial character on HBO Max’s Euphoria — she is hooking up with her best friend’s ex, after all — Sydney Sweeney, who plays the role, still feels connected to her.
“I think Cassie is a bit of a mix of both. I love her because I feel her pain, I feel her loss, and I feel for her growth. But I’m scared of the choices she makes because sometimes she doesn’t think everything through,” the actress explained.
“She has always wanted to be loved, whether it’s from her mom, her sister, her dad, boys, herself, and the part that complicates it is she doesn’t have that love for herself, and she doesn’t know how to achieve it. She thinks it’s through other people, but it’s through herself, and she doesn’t like herself enough to be able to not need other people in her life,” she shared of what motivates Cassie.
In season 2, Cassie has had some pretty crazy scenes — from puking in a hot tub to screaming, “I have never, ever been happier” in the girls’ bathroom, but Sweeney had no idea that the line would go viral.
“That was actually the first scene that we filmed. I was like, ‘Oh, my gosh, this is such a big scene to start off with. I guess we start out with a banger with Cassie.’ As the season went on, I kind of forgot about it, and [now] it’s everywhere,” she explained.
Fortunately, since Euphoria can sometimes touch on tough issues and situations, the blonde beauty is able to leave her character at the door when she comes home. “I’m able to just jump in and out … [I] basically break away all walls of protection. It’s a very healthy method for me, because if I had to stay in that mindset before [scenes], I don’t think I’d be able to go home as Syd in the healthy way,” she revealed.
“Sometimes I don’t even remember filming something because I’m so engrossed in the character,” she added.
Clearly, The White Lotus alum is one talented star — and we can’t wait to see what else Cassie has in store for us this season.
