The 2023 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) was a resounding success, showcasing a diverse array of cinematic talent and thought-provoking storytelling. With a lineup of films from around the world, the Toronto International Film Festival had something to offer everyone.

As the festival curtains drew to a close on September 17, it left audiences captivated by the remarkable films that graced the silver screen and the exceptional talents behind them.

The festival’s top prize, the People’s Choice Award, went to American Fiction.

People’s Choice Award: American Fiction

American Fiction is a biting satire of the publishing industry that stars Jeffrey Wright as a disillusioned academic who finds massive success after writing a deliberately stupid novel about Black life. The film is a scathing indictment of the way that the publishing industry often exploits and pigeonholes Black writers.

People’s Choice Documentary Award: Mr. Dressup: The Magic of Make Believe

Mr. Dressup: The Magic of Make Believe is a documentary about beloved children’s entertainer Ernie Coombs. The film follows Coombs’ life and career, and it explores the impact that his show Mr. Dressup had on generations of children.

People’s Choice Midnight Madness Award: Dicks: The Musical

Dicks: The Musical is a queer comedy from director Larry Charles. The film follows a group of friends who decide to stage a musical about dicks. It is a celebration of queer sexuality and the power of friendship.

Platform Award: Dear Jassi

Dear Jassi is a real-life “Romeo and Juliet” tale from director Tarsem Singh Dhandwar. The film follows the story of two young people from different religions who fall in love, despite the objections of their families. It is a must-see for fans of romantic dramas.

Best Canadian Feature Film Award: Solo

Solo is a moving and intimate drama from director Sophie Dupuis. The film follows the story of a young woman who returns to her hometown to care for her dying mother.

TIFF 2023 Trends

In addition to the awards, the Toronto International Film Festival also showcased a number of trends in filmmaking. One of the most notable trends was the rise of female and BIPOC filmmakers. Over half of the films in this year’s festival were directed by women, and there was a strong representation of BIPOC filmmakers and stories.

Another trend was the focus on social and political issues. Many of the films in this year’s festival dealt with important issues such as climate change, racism, and sexism.

The 2023 Toronto International Film Festival was an overall success, celebrating of diversity and creativity in filmmaking, and showcasing some of the most exciting films of the year.
