This time last year, Tod’s newly appointed creative director, Walter Chiapponi, presented his first women’s ready-to-wear collection for the luxury fashion label. The world had yet to turn on its axis due to the coronavirus pandemic, and so during Milan Fashion Week, the Italian creative presented his FW20 show via a real, live runway show: a neutral-toned lineup of essential must-haves, designed for—as the Maison put it, “women who love classics, with respect and a touch of subtle boldness.” Ahead of his collection debut, he said, “I’d like to bring back a sense of Italian good taste, that zest for a certain relaxed yet sophisticated lifestyle. And sensuality.”
However, this year, Walter Chiapponi had a more specific goal: to deliver more “creativity and eccentricity than ever,” per a WWD report. His Fall-Winter 2021-2022 RTW womenswear collection was presented via a digital short film format, entitled “In a Moment.” In just under three minutes, the clip shows four different personalities of four models: Vittoria Ceretti, Malaika Holmen, Aylah Peterson, and Mika Schneider. They move about in the modernist, marble-adorned Casa Corbellini Wasserman, changing in and out of Tod’s FW21 wares. The intention is to show how different moods and aesthetics lend themselves to Chiapponi’s upcoming collection—be it a bright blue leather puffer jacket for the weekend or a curve-hugging quilted duvet jacket teamed with a matching topper for date night. Experience every look below.
As described in the line’s collection notes, Chiapponi’s 25-piece line teams sportswear with the “voluptuous femininity of couture.” It worked. The creative director delivered a line that’s timeless, as to cater to its longtime clients, and unique to draw the eyes of younger generations. So did the collection’s unexpected details: chunky-heeled loafers in bright pops of blue and pink, oversized hobo bags that could hold a four-course meal and a bottle of wine, and extra wide-brimmed toppers reminiscent of the 50s.
