The RealReal

Today, on the first day of Earth Month, The RealReal is offering its more than 20 million members a sustainable gift of sorts: a new limited-run upcycled collection created in collaboration with eight buzzy brands, including Balenciaga, Jacquemus, Simone Rocha, and A-COLD-WALL*. Thanks to 50-plus donations, ReCollection 01 has repurposed cast-off accessories and ready-to-wear into a one-of-a-kind capsule. “As a designer, I think it’s the biggest compliment for your designs to have an afterlife – to me, that is luxury,” said the eco-chic designer Stella McCartney, who contributed a houndstooth-print blazer from her Fall 2017 runway collection and cropped cotton pants from Resort 2017.

Such elusive pieces were given new life by the Los Angeles-based circular fashion initiative Atelier & Repairs, which spent three months mending and re-imagining each item in a zero-waste process that employed no virgin fabrications. A large tear, for example, on a long-sleeved whipstitch Stella McCartney dress was repaired with rainbow hand stitching, while many other of the other donations (a Dries Van Noten button down; an Ulla Johnson dress-turned-tapestry; a Zero + Maria Cornejo off-the-shoulder number) were accented with scraps of unfinished vintage quilts. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of each piece will be donated to One Tree Planted to support its global reforestation work.

“To have such a dynamic group of luxury brands join us for our first collection sends an incredibly powerful message about the importance of circularity and the opportunity we all have to support a more sustainable future for fashion,” said The RealReal founder and CEO Julie Wainwright, who launched the consignment site in 2011. “Our hope is that ReCollection will inspire people to think about the afterlife of what they own and embrace more conscious consumption.”
