Bringing her sustainable touch to the beauty sphere, fashion designer Stella McCartney is releasing her own curated range of skincare essentials, dubbed Stella, this September.
Created in harmony with both nature and with the LVMH Beauty Division, McCartney has maintained her vegan, cruelty-free, and minimalist principles, utilizing only what is needed for a “conscious luxury” skincare line.
The assortment is comprised of three core (refillable) products — a Reset Cleanser, an Alter-Care Serum, and a moisturizing Restore Cream — based on Stella’s personal philosophy of using “only what you need.”
“The truth is that everything we create has an impact [on the environment],” said McCartney in a statement. “The choice we have is how much. It’s our responsibility to minimize this as much as possible, and, as an industry to be honest and transparent about it.”
The reusable bottles have been molded from recycled glass and feature reusable pump-kits that include recycled plastic.
After being named creative director of French luxury fashion house Chloé in 1997, McCartney founded her own eponymous label in 2001. As a lifelong vegetarian with a close connection to nature, McCartney garnered a reputation for spearheading eco-conscious luxury fashion design, refusing to implement genuine leather or fur in her collections. Bringing that mindset to beauty, McCartney is introducing an alternative to our collective preconceived notions regarding luxury skincare, dubbing the approach Alter-Care.
“I was raised to see things from a different perspective, to question and challenge conventions, to seek out another way,” said McCartney. “Growing up in Scotland, I learnt to smell nature, hear her, learn from her and most importantly respect her. I believe she has it all and if we see that, we can feed our body and our soul inside and out.”
She continued, “It is now my wish to create a family and community outside of my own that feels the same need for a mindful alternative in beauty. Desirable products that truly work and reflect my values and commitment to living in harmony with nature.”
She worked on the assortment for two years with LVMH’s research and development teams. “We set out with an idea, and we didn’t want to compromise — on results, the origin of our ingredients, and, of course, ensuring we minimized our impact on Mother Earth — we kept on trying,” said McCartney. “I believe the consumer needs to know there’s another way, that they have a choice.”
