In stark contrast to the mounting expectations from the public and herself, Simone Biles‘ Olympic run was riddled with tumult. She wrestled with the state of her mental wellness, a haunting case of the “twisties,” and the pressure to perform at a fabled standard of perfection. Yet, despite her career’s dreariest public moment, the revolutionary gymnast returned from her mental health hiatus with a bronze win for the balance beam finals on Tuesday. And while it may not be the gold medal that the world tactlessly expects of her, but it left her with two more records in the sport.

In total, the 24-year-old now has 32 Olympic and world medals, tying with Larisa Latynina of the Soviet Union. However, Biles has more gold medals overall. The balance beam final also awarded Biles with her seventh Olympic medal, tying her again with Shannon Miller as the most successful American gymnast at the international Games. Biles still eclipses Miller with her gold medals as she has four medals while the latter has two.

Ahead of her entering this year’s Olympics — which she notably was eager to finish — the defending champion was already the most decorated gymnast of her country. In June, she secured her seventh US All-Around championship title, eclipsing national records and expectedly securing the honor of becoming the most awarded female US gymnast. Since entering the U.S. Championships in 2013, Biles has consecutively won every all-around competition. She was previously tied for six titles with Clara Schroth Lomady, whose titles were won between 1945 and 1952, and she is now tied with US Gymnastics Hall of Famer Alfred Jochim for most by any American.

Moreover, the intensity of the athletic challenges that Biles can leisurely debut has revolutionized her sport. Most recently, at the U.S. Classics, she performed the Yurchenko double pike vault — a stunt so challenging that it has been notoriously performed by men only. With Biles’ recent mental bouts, she’s illuminated that her glory has come at a price and that even her blinding star power doesn’t erase her humanity.
