It was only from afar that we were able to witness Princess Diana as a mother to Prince William and Prince Harry. While their time in the limelight was often glamorous and shrouded in media attention, it is easy to forget that the young family would have undergone experiences similar – and very normal – to our own.
During an episode of the new Apple Fitness+ series Time to Walk this week, Prince William has recalled being driven to school by his mother with brother Harry while they sang Tina Turner’s greatest hits in the car.
“One of the songs I massively remember and has stuck with me all this time, and I to this day still quite enjoy secretly, is Tina Turner’s ‘The Best,’” the Duke of Cambridge said. His voice cracked and he sounded tearful. “Because sitting in the back seat, singing away, it felt like a real family moment.”
The royal was walking through the grounds of Sandringham, the Queen’s Norfolk estate as he discussed his mother. “My mother, she’d be driving along singing at the top of her voice. We’d even get the policeman [security] in the car: he’d occasionally be singing along as well. We’d be singing and listening to the music right the way up to the gates at school where they dropped you off.”
He added that he continues the experience with his own family and that wife Kate Middleton, Prince George, 8, Princess Charlotte, 6, and Prince Louis, 3 have “already inherited my family’s love of music.”
“Most mornings there’s a massive fight between Charlotte and George as to what song is played in the morning,” Prince William said.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge celebrated their 10-year wedding anniversary in April. To honor the occasion they gave us a rare insight into their romance and family dynamic. It is seriously adorable.
