At the weekend photographs emerged of Elizabeth Debicki filming the fifth season of The Crown. While we’ve seen small glimpses of the Australian actress from on set in recent months, we were treated to a rendition of Princess Diana’s most iconic look: the “revenge dress”.
The original off-the-shoulder dress was created by Greek designer Christina Stambolian and worn to a Vanity Fair fundraiser for the Serpentine Gallery in Kensington Gardens in 1994. The dress was paired with a layered pearl necklace, black pantyhose and pumps at the time which was perfectly replicated for the drama series.
It was worn on the evening ITV aired a documentary where Prince Charles admitted to having an affair with now-wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall. Thus earning its eternal title. According to one report, Diana originally purchased the dress in 1991 but deemed it to risqué to wear until then.
Upon announcement of the role, Debicki released a statement honouring the late Princess. “Princess Diana’s spirit, her words and her actions live in the hearts of so many,” Debicki said in August 2020. “It is my true privilege and honour to be joining this masterful series, which has had me absolutely hooked from episode one.”

Debicki takes over the prestigious role from Emma Corrin who portrayed Princess Diana in season four of The Crown.
“I’m really excited about it. I think Elizabeth is brilliant and I think that it’s totally right to allow her to take on a different kind of life for the next part of [Diana’s] journey,” Corrin told The Wrap earlier this year. “So I’ll be really excited to see what happens.”
Season five will premiere in 2022 and navigate Diana’s most dramatic experiences. A release date has not yet been set by Netflix. The sixth and final season is expected to air in 2023.
