It’s been a big year so far for Olivia Rodrigo – stratospheric international stardom, a wildly successful album – but the star still calls her debut appearance at this year’s Met Gala “truly one of the best nights of my life”. Dressed in a Saint Laurent black lace ensemble replete with feathers and diamonds, the Driver’s Licence singer opted for a fun beauty look that felt equal parts youthful and wearable.

Steel-grey eyeshadow, thick lashes and artfully placed eyeliner flicked over the inner and outer creases of each eye to create a playful aesthetic, while the star’s sleek up-do added a layer of sophistication. Slicked-back bun styles have been a major hair trend for several seasons – just ask Hailey Bieber – with the chic look’s appeal lying in the versatility, speed and ease at which it can be created.

Rodrigo’s hairstylist Clayton Hawkins said that the simplicity of the style was the very reason it was chosen for her look. “For this year’s Met Gala with Olivia Rodrigo, we wanted to keep it clean and chic and let her beauty speak for itself,” he said in a statement. The style was shaped by two mini buns at the back of Rodrigo’s head, with the ends left to fan out straight and spiky around the knots.

Hawkins said he began by brushing out Rodrigo’s damp hair with the Tangle Teezer Ultimate Detangler and applying the Oribe Supershine Moisturizing Cream from her mid-shafts to ends. Next he used the Dyson Supersonic™ hair dryer to blow dry Rodrigo’s hair straight, before flat-ironing her hair in small sections with the Dyson Corrale™ hair straightener.

Next, Hawkins employed Oribe’s cult Gold Lust Nourishing Hair Oil to create a glossy finish, raking the product through with the Tangle Teezer Ultimate Finisher to smooth. Pulling Rodrigo’s hair back, Hawkins then formed the two sleek knots behind her head,  securing them with hair pins and letting her ends spike out on the sides.

A spritz of the Oribe Superfine Hairspray ensured that everything was locked into place, with an extra layer of Oribe Gold Lust Nourishing Hair Oil smoothed over Rodrigo’s hairline for mirrorball shine.

While we sadly can’t see a red carpet invite landing in our inbox any time soon (sigh), we’re glad to be able to emulate Rodrigo’s sleek up-do for less glamorous activities.
