New York Fashion Week always feels like back to school for adults. There’s a vibrancy in the air, you’re seeing people you haven’t seen in months  — or in the case of this year’s Spring/Summer 2022 season, literally years  — and you’ve got a whole new rack of clothing you can’t wait to show off to your friends. This year, vaccinated groups have gathered to see fashion’s brightest and finest looks we’re all going to be wearing next year — and let me tell you, the hair and makeup this season has been unreal.  Clearly, a year in quarantine has forced us all to explore creatively, and it’s hard not to fall in love with the beauty trends we’re seeing. Cat eyes are still dominating the scene, and we’re embracing the mullet/wolf cut now more than ever. But there are some gorgeous new concepts, and we’ve gathered a few of them.

Pops Of Color

Erigo X

Prabal Gurung, Erigo, and Tanya Taylor all leaned heavily into the bright, neon color shades this season. What was most notable, however, was the placement of the colors – neon pinks in the inner corner at Erigo, a thick wash of teal and yellow in the outer corner at Tanya Taylor.

The Return Of Dark Lips

Cinq à Sept embraced a very Courtney Love, 90’s rocker chick-esque aesthetic for their show — which was literally inspired by My So Called Life — and it’s wonderful to see the return of a dark, rich, raspberry-colored matte lip, particularly paired with a nearly bare face.

Structured Braids

Christian Siriano

Christian Siriano worked with Dyson and lead hairstylist Jawara Wauchope to incorporate his Italian heritage into the hair for his fashion show, using ribbons and wire to create these aerodynamic masterpieces.

Unexpected Glitter

Parsons grad Sintra Martins’ Saint Sintra created a glitter dystopia with her makeup and hair textures. Makeup artist Zenia Jaeger created glitter “gashes” dripping down the models’ faces, giving very Olivia Rodrigo energy. Over at Collina Strada, Allie Smith created ear art with gold shimmer dusted on the ears, accentuated perfectly with the chunky highlights and multi-toned extensions.

Puckered Pouts

Ulla Johnson

Speaking of Collina Strada, Smith gave the models a gentle wash on their lips of color using products by Tula, while Ulla Johnson’s show at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden utilized the space by embracing shades of coral and magenta on the models’ lips. The color was precisely placed only on the center of the lips and gently washed out, as if in bloom.

Collina Strada

It feels like everyone stopped straightening their hair this season, or maybe even started doing the Curly Girl Method, because the curls were out and on display. Not just curls, either: braids, locs, afros, you name it. From CDLM to Collina Strada to Gabriela Hearst, the curls and coils were here to stay.

Pink And Peach Eyeshadow

Pink and peach eyeshadow is making a big comeback this year, although it feels like it barely left. To rock a pink eyeshadow without looking conjunctivitis-chic, pick a pink in the opposite tone as your undertone. If you’re golden, you want a blue-red; if you’re red, stick to the yellow. Adeam’s pastel dream of a show featured the models in light washes of peach on their eyes, which only enhanced the beauty of the environment.
