It’s high time a historic fashion rivalry was re-enacted on the small screen. Apple TV+ today announced a series order for The New Look, an ‘epic thriller’ that chronicles the heights of Coco Chanel‘s fashion dominance in pre-World War II Paris and the rise of Christian Dior‘s post-war ‘New Look.’ The series will star Ben Mendelsohn (as Dior) and Juliette Binoche (as Chanel) and will be written, executive produced, and directed by Todd A. Kessler.

According to the announcement, the series will feature some of the most powerful founders in fashion—including but not limited to Chanel, Dior, Pierre Balmain, Cristóbal Balenciaga, Hubert de Givenchy, Pierre Cardin, and Yves Saint Laurent—and will be set against the backdrop of the Nazi occupation of Paris. Moreover, they’ve dubbed the series a ‘live action’ ‘epic thriller,’ which are two phrases not often juxtaposed with the rather more genteel and lofty origins of the luxury fashion industry.
