After decades in front of a camera modeling in shoot after shoot throughout her iconic career, Naomi Campbell is embracing the next chapter of her life, specifically one that involves being much more pared down. In a new interview, the 52-year-old supermodel opened up about why she’s going for a more natural, fresh-faced look these days.

Campbell told British Vogue that when she was starting in the business she’d wear “as much makeup as possible,” comparing it to a “mask.” Today, she says her approach is “completely the opposite.”

“I feel as though I’ve come to realize that it’s better to wear as little make-up as possible. So you can see you. I don’t want to be behind a mask. I want people to see me. And to feel me. And to see my expressions,” she told the outlet.

One reason for the switch may be because the model recently became a mom in May 2021, when she welcomed her daughter and shared the news on Instagram with a photo holding her newborn’s feet.

One thing her daughter definitely influenced is her focus on self-care. “Obviously I want to take care of myself, because I want to be around for my daughter as much as I can, you know, but I was already on this track – I just think that being a mother has enhanced it,” she said in the interview.

Just yesterday, Campbell shared an adorable Instagram post of her daughter taking her first steps. “My Love ,My heartbeat First Steps walking ❤️❤️ ❤️,” she captioned the photo holding her hand.

When she’s not made-up on set, Campbell still embraces a glowy look and loves when her skin looks “hydrated, dewy, oily.” Fittingly, she just starred in her longtime friend and makeup pro Pat McGrath‘s new campaign for Pat McGrath Labs’s Divine Skin Rose 001, which is touted as “Pat’s signature glow in a bottle.” If it has McGrath and Campbell’s stamp of approval, consider us sold.
