Ahhh the messy top knot. It’s a style we’ve all no doubt come to know intimately, having spent the better part of the last 18 months at home. For many, it’s a daily go-to when you want to feel comfortable and have your hair off your face. But it’s also a really versatile style that can be polished up for the evening, as evidenced by longtime messy bun advocate Hailey Bieber.

Getting your messy bun to look more effortlessly undone than unsightly, however, can be a challenge. Thankfully, as with most modern-day problems, TikTok presents myrid solutions in the form of simple messy bun tutorials. There are a number of different techniques to try for a quick and easy top knot, depending on your preferred level of polish.

If you’re a traditionalist with a penchant for a rounded, donut-style messy bun, this speedy solution from TikTok creator @quintymirjam has gone viral on the platform for creating the perfect messy bun in under a minute.

It looks easy, but I’ll admit it takes a bit of practice to get the twist-and-flip technique just right. My hand-eye coordination has apparently taken a hit in recent years, so it took me some time to get it right – but once I did, it worked like a charm and I now do this most mornings.

If your hair is particularly thick or you prefer your messy bun to have a little more structure, creator @haleyrapp demonstrates how to knot your hair to create more tucks and loose ends.

But if you’d prefer to level up your messy bun, why not follow Mrs Bieber’s lead and emulate the evening iteration she recently rocked in Las Vegas? Created by Amanda Lee, the model’s look is sleek and polished against the scalp, with the hair piled high and pulled tight into a bun at the crown.

Lee then left pieces loose around the face, with the end sections of the up-do hanging out to create a more modern vibe.

Trés chic and the opposite of time consuming.
