Have you ever wondered how exactly our favorite famous faces achieve that effortless natural glow? Or the perfect cheekbones day to day? Sure, there’s a level of genetics and just a touch of cosmetic procedures that go into the aspirational complexion but for celebrity makeup artist Mary Phillips, it comes down to how you apply your make up. Take note.

Known for painting the faces of Kendall Jenner, Hailey Bieber and Jennifer Lopez, Phillips knows a thing or two about the perfect base. This week, she joined TikTok and for her very first post she gifted us with the ultimate hack. Introducing: the reverse makeup routine.

To ensure a sculpted and fresh complexion, Phillips starts with contouring before she applies foundation. “To me it makes more sense. It’s like laying down the bones under the skin. So the contour and highlight being the bones and the skin being the foundation.”

Here she applied a cream contour (or bronzer would work as well) at her cheek bones, forehead and nose and blends it in using a brush. She continues with highlighter on the high points of her face and a concealer under eyes and around her nose. She then blended a blush over her cheeks.

Et voila! In another iteration, one content creator applied a liquid foundation over the top using a fluffy brush. Phillips proved to be a fan commenting on the Instagram Reel, “Beautiful.”

If you’re looking for more makeup hacks from the queen herself, Phillips has promised to share more videos on TikTok in the future. That warrants an immediate follow. In the meantime here’s a throwback tutorial on lip lining with Bella Hadid. You’re welcome.
