There were many talking points at Louis Vuitton’s spring summer ’21 show, which took place in Paris yesterday afternoon. The front row, for example, which featured brand muses Alicia Vikander, Laura Harrier and Léa Seydoux, as well as loved-up newlyweds Natalia Vodianova and Antoine Arnault. Or, you could talk about the accessories, including the so-bad-they’re-good spin on ‘house shoes’—or the influx of chic new handbag shapes (12, by our count).
But by and large our favourite moment was the opening look—oversized beige trousers, cinched at the waist with an oversized belt, with a sweater bearing the single word: VOTE. Fashion brands tend to err on the side of caution when it comes to politics, very rarely using the runway to make direct political statements. Which only made this timely display from Nicolas Ghesquiere all the more remarkable.
The American public will vote in the presidential election on Tuesday, November 3rd, with many having already cast their vote by mail-in ballot. With concerns over voter suppression in key states, the message that everybody who can should enroll to vote, and partake in the democratic process, is a powerful one.
Celebrities have also been using fashion to encourage their fans and followers to vote in November. Yesterday, New York-based designer Christian Siriano shared photos of Julianne Moore wearing a bespoke ‘VOTE’ gown, while Hailey Bieber encouraged fans with a ‘VOTE’ face mask. Other celebrities, like Zoë Kravitz, joked about giving followers their ‘skincare routine’ before encouraging them to head to the polls. Kylie Jenner shared scantily-clad bikini pictures, but managed to get 50,000 of her 197 million followers to enroll.
