A clip from the Louis Vuitton Cruise 2022 show

June 15, 2021: It appears as though 2021 will go down in history as The Year of Blush, and according to legendary makeup artist Pat McGrath, 2022 will, too. Nothing has made that sentiment more evident than the cool effortlessness of the Louis Vuitton Cruise 2022 show on Tuesday at Axe Majeure in Paris. There, creative director Nicolas Ghesquière—alongside McGrath—sent models down the runway in nearly bare faces—with a gorgeous wash of blush on their cheeks. The softness of their makeup was the perfect contrast to the designer’s color-saturated prints and eye-catching silhouettes.

The blush is particularly stunning on the models with darker skin tones, using shades of clay and terracotta to replicate the internal flush on Black skin. It all feels elegantly natural—like the models are heading to a lovely brunch after going to an easy early-morning yoga class. It takes a lot of work to feel and look like you’re not wearing anything, and McGrath nailed it. For those who think blush is reserved for a person of a certain age or think it’s passé—reconsider. Louis Vuitton and Pat McGrath prove that perhaps, the only makeup we should be wearing is blush this year? Your highlighters and eyeshadow palettes are quaking in fear.
