Self-proclaimed “bop star” Lizzo has decided to spice up our social media feeds, dropping a four-picture photoset of her wearing a warm-toned grid dress that landed somewhere in the realm of a starburst fantasy meets 60’s mod fashion. The panels of the garment varied in shades of bright pink, bright orange, pastel mint and pastel pink. The outfit was completed with a set of gold, sparkly hoops and a Gucci crown, reminding us that she is in fact, royalty.

This outfit follows a trend we’ve been seeing among celebs lately. While some celebrities opt for a more minimalistic and monotone approach to their fashion, such a JLo’s stunning beige pantsuit, we’ve also seen some opting for more intricate and fun patterns that break up the sterile pattern we can sometimes see in contemporary, Instagram-era style. Honorable mentions for this trend include, but are definitely not limited to Justin and Hailey Bieber’s recent floral strut or Olivia Rodrigo’s homage to Britney Spears in Vintage Roberto Cavalli.

Lizzo has never been one to shy away with being bold with her style, in fact, some would call her a trend setter this summer. She was one of the first celebs to break out the bleached eyebrow look, and while reception was polarized, it was a hallmark moment for the singer. Alongside the bleached brows, Lizzo also pulled out a blonde bob to accompany the look. A blonde bob is reminiscent of the same era that her Twitter dress pulls from, the Mod fashion movement of the 1960’s.

Mod is defined by a subculture that began in London in the 1960’s, and largely based their fashion off of vibrancy and a love for the pop art movement of the same era. Think Andy Warhol or Roy Lichtenstein. While Lizzo’s dress seems lightly inspired by the movement, with it’s grid-like structure and vibrant colors, it is a contemporary twist on a much-beloved historical fashion era, one that hasn’t seen much exposure since 2018, when Mod fashion made an appearance during Paris fashion week and became a summer trend.
