In an unexpected turn of events, our 2020 holiday makeup inspiration comes from a surprising source: Playboy, specifically, the magazine’s December 1966 issue. Kourtney Kardashian paid homage to the glittery, Christmas-themed cover and shared the final product via Instagram on Thursday, December 17. She captioned the glamorous shot “1966 💋.”
The late American model Susan Bernard is the original face behind the look. For the up-close portrait shot for the cover of the 1966 magazine, she stunned in one of the biggest beauty trends of the 60s: bold blue eyeshadow, winged eyeliner, and mauve-colored lipstick. Her dark brown hair was seemingly covered in teal glitter, and she wore large earrings resembling red bulb Christmas tree ornaments.
Kardashian’s recreation came to life with the help of makeup artist Tonya Brewer, stylist Dani Michelle, and celebrity hairstylist Glen Coco. Designer Veronique Vicari Barnes created the earrings, which tragically seem unavailable to the public. The hairdresser took the photo and later told one impressed Instagram follower that all it took to capture the pic was “a red backdrop and a Nikon and a flash.”
There’s no denying that Kardashian’s recreation of the Playboy cover has an uncanny resemblance to Bernard’s, as evidenced below. The entire look is remarkable, but it’s the eyeshadow that really does it for us.
