Naomi Osaka continues her path towards changing the world with her latest endeavor: KINLÒ, a functional skincare brand developed for people with melanin-rich skin. Built using clean formulations, KINLÒ won’t make you a championship winner like Osaka, but it’ll make your skin a Grand Slam, with ingredients that will help to protect and rejuvenate Black, brown, and darker skin tones of all types.
“Bringing KINLÒ to life was a personal and professional goal of mine. I am thrilled that my first entrepreneurial endeavor will be something meaningful to my community, and I couldn’t be more thankful for my team at A-Frame and GoDaddy. Through my personal experience and learnings, I have found that Black, Brown, and other melanated skin-toned communities are often an after-thought in the discussion and research surrounding sun care, including being excluded from clinical studies on skin cancer. Additionally, there is a lack of sun protection products being made with melanated skin in mind. These points have all led me to create KINLÒ, a mission-first brand,” Osaka said in a statement provided to GRAZIA. Osaka also worked with GoDaddy to create a custom website and online store for KINLÒ.
The brand’s name is an homage to Osaka’s biracial and bicultural heritage, since both Kin and Lo mean “gold” in Japanese and Haitian Creole, respectively. Osaka will serve as CEO of the brand, with Dr. Naana Boakye serving as Dermatology Director to both observe and perfect formulation, but also to educate the Black, Brown and Asian-Pacific communities about skin protection and skin cancer prevention.
Made with clean formulations, KINLÒ’s initial launch is an assortment of active and recovery skincare products, all which will make your melanin pop. There are four hero products in the first launch, including Hydrating Eye Cream, Hydrating Golden Mist, and Hydrating Lip Balm. The most exciting part, however, is the Active Golden Rays Sunscreen, a mineral-based sunscreen that promises no white cast.
