What does a new Princess wear to a sporting function? This week Kate Middleton attended a function at Olympic Park in London for the sporting charity Coach Core. To commemorate the occasion, the Princess of Cambridge chose to wear a cobalt vintage Chanel tweed jacket from 1995.
Middleton stepped out with husband Prince William overnight pairing the hero piece with navy tailored pants and suede pumps. The look proved to be exceptionally practical as the Princess met with many different people and even played a game of lawn bowls.
Of course anyone privy to the history of the French fashion house would know that Gabriella “Coco” Chanel conceived the tweed jacket in the 1920s. She was inspired by men’s hunting and fishing attire worn by her lover the Duke of Westminster and thus, made a groundbreaking iteration for women.
It’s not the first time Middleton has worn vintage Chanel at a sports event. In 2017 she was photographed wearing a tweed dress on a visit to Paris where she played rugby with young children.
The 40-year-old often nods to history through her choice of clothing. She paid homage to the late Princess Diana in a houndstooth coat for the same event, decades later, and recently wore jewelry that had ties to Ukraine, seemingly in support of the war-torn country.
We will have to wait and see what she and her stylists have in store for King Charles III’s coronation. The historic event is set to take place on May 6 2023 at Westminster Abbey.
