There were many royals, celebrities and heads of state at King Charles III’s coronation on May 6. Representing President Joe Biden, Dr. Jill Biden attended the historic event and brought her granddaughter as her plus-one.
The First Lady arrived wearing a cornflower blue look from the reigning king of American fashion, Ralph Lauren. The look featured a wrapped suit jacket with a matching knee-length skirt. She accessorized with a blue bow, matching gloves, plus a cream-colored clutch and her go-to brand for heels, Marion Parke.
Finnegan Biden, 23, chose a yellow midi dress with long cape from Markarian. She accessorized with a top-handle bag, pointy-toe pumps a custom yellow headband by Gigi Burris Millinery.
This marks the first time a First Lady attended a coronation — the last of course was for Queen Elizabeth II, which took place 70 years ago. However, a future First Lady has been in attendance. In 1953, Jacqueline Bouvier (as she was known at the time) was a reporter for the Washington Times-Herald and covered the Queen’s coronation.
The President sent his congratulations to King Charles during the ceremony writing on Twitter, “Congratulations to King Charles III and Queen Camilla on their Coronation. The enduring friendship between the U.S. and the U.K. is a source of strength for both our peoples. I am proud the First Lady is representing the United States for this historic occasion.”
Finnegan is the daughter of Hunter Biden (Joe Biden’s son) and Kathleen Buhle. Her older sister is Naomi Biden, who married at the White House last year, and her younger sister is Maisy Biden. (Hunter has two other children, Navy Joan Roberts and Beau.) Finnegan graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 2021 with a degree in history with a concentration in American studies and a minor in art history.
She’s joined her grandparents on the campaign trail before and during her time in the UK with her grandmother, they’ve been having a pretty productive time. A day before the coronation, the two met Kate Middleton at a special reception for overseas guests at Buckingham Palace.
They also met Akshata Murty, the wife of British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, at 10 Downing Street. “Thank you for your kindness and warm welcome to the United Kingdom, Akshata,” Dr. Biden wrote on Instagram. “I look forward to building on our friendship for years to come.”
Other Americans in attendance at the royal coronation included special climate envoy John Kerry, who has worked with Charles on climate initiatives. There were also American Idol judges, Lionel Richie and Katy Perry, who will both perform at the Coronation Concert on May 7.
