Jason Sudeikis‘ relaxed approach to the Golden Globes dress code really epitomizes the most exasperated-yet-humorous of phrases: ‘Wow, men really are out here doing the least.’ The actor, who won the Golden Globe for Best Performance By An Actor in a Musical or Comedy Television Series, went viral thanks to the rainbow hoodie he wore to the virtual ceremony.

While fellow winner Anya Taylor-Joy wore not one but two Dior gowns for the online awards show, the 45-year-old shunned traditional black tie attire in favor of an extremely casual alternative, the humble sweatshirt.

Sudeikis later revealed to Dateline that the rainbow hoodie, which was emblazoned with the word ‘Forward,’ was actually branded merchandise for his sister’s New York workout studio. “I believe when people that you care about do cool, interesting things, that you should support them, so this is no different than that. I have a multitude of hoodies for a multitude of things that I believe in and support but this one seemed the most appropriate,” he explained.

It’s a lovely thought – and a palpable pandemic mood – so we’re not mad at it, but Twitter was quick to point out both the hilarity and the disparity between Sudeikis’ laid back look and that of his female counterparts. “Jason Sudeikis wearing a hoodie to the #GoldenGlobes is an outfit not ONE actress would be able to ‘get away with,'” wrote one user.

The same user pointed to a recent interview in which Bridgerton star Phoebe Dynevor admitted that her appearance was held to a higher standard than that of her male co-stars during press rounds. “Even on Zooms, I was expected to dress up and look my best,” Dynevor said. “Some of my male costars were like, wearing whatever they wanted.”

The Twitter user also pointed out that the remote appearances didn’t mean that women were exempt from such standards. “Regina King had her dog in the BACK, she was in a gown in the front,” they continued, referring to King’s glittering Louis Vuitton dress, which reportedly took 40,000 sequins and 350 hours to make. “Actresses aren’t afforded the chance to phone outfits in.”

Many saw the humor in Sudeikis’ choice, with host Tina Fey even getting in on the action. “If anybody wants to know where they can get Jason Sudeikis’ hoodie, go to nbc.com/globesfashion,” Fey joked after the actor’s acceptance speech.

Others found the hoodie refreshing and relatable, with one writing, “Huge congrats to Jason Sudeikis not only for winning but for making history tonight as the first person ever to accept an award in a tie dye hoodie… you are a hero among a sea of quarantined people in tie dye.”

While certainly the only person rocking a rainbow hoodie, other attendees also dressed down, with Jodie Foster in pajamas and Bill Murray in a Hawaiian-print shirt.
