Autumn is a magical season, with its vibrant colors transforming nature into a spectacle of warm and inviting shades. It’s the ideal time to capture the beauty of trees adorned in golden orange to intense red… And to take a new profile picture immersed in foliage! Here’s how to take a beautiful photo using autumn colors.

For nature and photography enthusiasts, foliage represents the ideal inspiration for a rich collection of shots that capture the unique atmosphere and colors of this time of year.

Photographers often leverage the beauty of foliage to obtain picturesque images, including portraits where the main subject contrasts with the colorful and varied background of leaves and sky. These elements add warmth, depth, and visual interest to photographs, and many people love taking photos during this season to immortalize its fleeting beauty.

Samsung’s experts, with the support of Claudia De Nicolò (aka @she.s.lola), have shared 6 tips for taking a beautiful posed photo during this captivating season.

Claudia has provided her firsthand experience to share insights and personal impressions on this type of photography, while Samsung’s experts have offered some technical advice on how to achieve the best results, with special tips dedicated to those who want to experiment with the camera and features of the Samsung Galaxy S23.

Choose the Right Time

Light is crucial for capturing beautiful autumn foliage photos. The golden light of sunrise and sunset gives these images a warm and enveloping quality. Try to plan photo sessions during these hours for the best results. Be cautious of noon sunlight, which can create sharp and unflattering shadows.

Utilize Fog and Rainy Days

Autumn is often synonymous with bad weather, but there are “games” that can be played thanks to the atmospheric conditions of this period. Particularly on rainy days, you can fully leverage the different light of the season, which can be described as soft and rare. Foggy or rainy days can give a magical atmosphere to your autumn photos. Fog envelops the trees in a mysterious halo, while raindrops create reflections on the leaves, adding details and brightness to the images. Don’t be discouraged by adverse weather conditions; often, they offer the best photographic opportunities.

Dress Considering Autumn Colors

Autumn is characterized by a variety of breathtaking colors. Experiment with backgrounds and clothing of any color to create interesting contrasts. For example, if you are in a forest with red leaves, wear clothes of a different color to make your profile stand out. Play with contrasts to achieve captivating photos.

Experiment with Poses and Expressions

It is crucial to avoid the fake effect. The real trick is to create a genuine connection with nature, without looking at the camera or thinking about the shot. Experiment with a variety of poses and expressions, seeking the most natural one. Don’t limit yourself to always smiling in the same way. Play with intense gazes, subdued smiles, and distant looks to add emotional depth to the photos.

Play with Depth of Field

Use the portrait mode or Pro mode of the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra to create a blurred background and highlight the autumn colors. Choose an interesting main subject, such as a tree with colored leaves, and make sure the background is blurred.

Don’t Forget a Wise Photo Editing

When I shoot with my Samsung Galaxy S23, I use the Expert Raw program for producing images in RAW (a technical term for a file to work on), allowing me to refine the images in a more professional way. I don’t edit my photos much, but I believe that post-production is a fundamental process. After taking photos, remember to further enhance them, perhaps adjusting brightness, contrast, and saturation to highlight autumn colors. However, be careful not to exaggerate, always maintaining a natural look.

Claudia De Nicolò, a graduate of the Academy of Photography and Communication ISFCI in Rome, along with her colleague Bianca Trevisani, inaugurated Kobo Studio, a co-working space that focuses on developing and realizing photographic projects and following their creative process, from artistic direction to photography, to post-production. Today, she works as a freelance photographer and art director for projects ranging from portraiture to reportage, to commercial photography.
