Justin and Hailey Bieber have always seemed like a Hollywood fairytale — friends who turned into lovers, a whirlwind romance and one of the most stylish weddings of the decade. But theirs is also a relationship that has been fraught with external adversity, and Hailey has spoken candidly this week about the work they’ve both had to put into their love story to keep it healthy.

Speaking to Harpers BAZAAR for a cover story this month, Hailey Bieber shared her attitude toward marriage, explaining that you really can’t prepare yourself for the future. “I just think life is changing all the time,” she tells the magazine. “Day to day, week to week, year to year. I think a perfect example of that is over the last six months, both of us have gone through very serious health issues. You have to figure out how to deal with this shit as it comes, you know? There’s a reason they say ‘for better or for worse.’ Like, that’s for real!”

She is, of course, talking about her brain clot discovery after stroke-like symptoms, as well as Justin Bieber’s diagnosis with Ramsay Hunt syndrome. Not to mention how busy the couple are individually — Hailey launched her skincare line Rhode recently, and Justin has been continuing his Justice touring schedule globally.

Refreshingly, Hailey Bieber acknowledged that their marriage hasn’t been all high points. But she says that at the end of the day, they’re still excited about each other. “He’s still the person that I wanna be rushing back to. I might fly somewhere and go do a job, but I can’t wait to come back and hang out. And I feel like that’s because of the effort that’s been put in on both sides.”

Calling Justin her “best friend,” Hailey says “it still does take a lot of work to make it work.” Finally, a Hollywood couple that aren’t chalking their relationship success up to simple chemistry.
