Designer Betsey Johnson celebrated her milestone 80th birthday on August 10 by releasing a special birthday collection with some of her greatest hits — but the party didn’t stop there. She later hosted a bash at L.A.’s Lombardi House on August 23 that was as lively and eclectic as you’d expect from fashion’s Queen of Kitsch. Her name was lit up in glowing neon lights, there were brightly colored lawn chairs, bicycles, and pink plastic flamingos scattered across the venue, perfectly encompassed Johnson’s enduring brand.
Also fitting for the trendsetter? Having a slew of cool kids on-hand to ring in her big day. One included Euphoria actress (and fashion It-girl on the rise) Chloe Cherry, who wore a full look from the style icon’s 80th Birthday Collection.
Along with Cherry, Johnson was joined by stars like actress Larsen Thompson, influencer Benny Drama, and models Charlotte McKinney, Joy Corrigan, and Carmella Rose. Guests were treated with a surprise performance from RuPaul’s Drag Race star Gottmilk, who joined Johnson in dropping into a split — one of the designer’s signature moves.
Playing the recurring role as Faye in Euphoria, Cherry exudes a dry-humored Valley girl portrayal of a young woman hiding out with Fezco (Angus Cloud) and Ashtray (Javon Walton). Cherry manages to provide comic relief in some anxiety-inducing scenes and has been considered a breakout star of the series’ second season.
Off screen, she’s also been one-to-watch with her Y2K fairy-inspired sultry style aesthetic — similar to her on-screen persona.
She attended the festivities in Johnson’s 80th Bash Corset Raglan dress emblazoned with pink roses. She teamed her look with the brand’s Johnny Rose patent leather combat boots, also featuring a scattered rose print. Cherry accessorized her look with Johnson’s pink Rose Frontal Necklace, and pink Rose Linear Earrings, adding an extra dose of camp with her Champagne bucket bag.
Johnson’s 80th Birthday Collection included her beloved brightly-colored punk designs and some of Johnson’s landmark signatures, like her ‘80s-era tulle tutus and ‘90s-inspired Mary Jane platforms.
“This is a huge accomplishment in my life, and I can’t believe I made it this far,” Johnson said of her birthday. “I live every day to the fullest and have never felt so beautiful, energetic and optimistic for the future. Can’t wait for another 80 years.”
