With the return of the ‘90s and early aughts, there’s not only been an onslaught of low-rise, midriff-baring looks taking over both our Instagram feeds and the runways (looking at you, Miu Miu), but the reemergence of once tacky trends, such as lower back tattoos, belly button rings and butterfly accessories.

First seen in hairclip form on the likes of Bella Hadid (our ‘90s Depop dream girl), Elsa Hosk and Addison Rae, the butterfly trend has since expanded to clothing, led by none other than Dua Lipa.

After making her runway debut for Versace’s Milan Fashion Week show last month, Lipa headed to Lake Como, where she shared a photo of herself wearing a colourful butterfly crop top by up and coming Ukrainian-born, London-based designer Masha Popova—who, despite graduating just last year, also counts Hadid, Kylie Jenner, Solange and Billie Eilish as fans.

Lipa paired the statement piece with her favourite pair of baggy jeans by Eytys and wore her long hair loose, ensuring to flick it to the side to show off the full look.

This isn’t the first time the singer has shown her love for all things butterfly: most notably, she wore a Versace dress featuring a crystal butterfly-adorned bodice at the 2021 Grammys, and during this same Italy trip she donned a butterfly pendant. But her favourite butterfly outfit formula? That of a crop top and jeans.

Lipa first wore a butterfly-adorned crop in August, pairing her Yung Reaper Butterfly Denim Top with more Eytys jeans (the Sun Bleached Benz) and statement oversized eyewear by Kaleos Collection. She wore her hair, naturally, pulled back into ’90s pigtails.

Following Lipa’s winning outfit formula in Lake Como (her post got 5.7 million likes and counting), the 26-year-old popstar turned trendsetter shared a photo of herself yesterday wearing yet another butterfly crop.

Posing in front of her new artwork by Friends with You, Lipa wore a full look from Blumarine’s upcoming Spring/Summer 2022 collection, which was recently debuted at Milan Fashion Week in the middle of a collection practically made for the likes of Lipa and those also obsessing over all things Y2K. The singer paired her double denim with a trucker cap by London-based designer Mowalola and wore Blumarine sunglasses, jewellery and an arm cuff.

You know what they say: three times is a trend.

If Lipa has anything to do with it, soon not only will we soon all be wearing low-rise jeans, but we’ll be pairing them with butterfly crop tops.
