Doja Cat and SZA will debut their hit single “Kiss Me More” at the 2021 Billboard Music Awards on Sunday, May 23. The pop-hit currently holds the No. 5 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. Both artists have a history of success on the charts: Doja has six top-40 hits, including the number-one single “Say So.” SZA has scored nine top-10 hits on Billboard’s Hot R&B Songs chart, including her number-one hit, “The Weekend,” as well as four top 10s on the Hot 100. Her album CTRL debuted on top of Billboard’s Top R&B Albums chart. Both artists have had a top 10 album on the Billboard 200. SZA climbed as high as No. 3 with her first studio album, Ctrl. Doja Cat reached No. 9 with her sophomore album, Hot Pink.

Doja Cat is nominated for five BBMA awards, which is this year’s third-highest total for a female artist. SZA is nominated for one award. “Kiss Me More” is one of the many popular songs to come from Doja Cat’s forthcoming studio album, Planet Her. The Grammy-nominated singer and rapper said she was keen to avoid rehashing the sounds of 2019’s Hot Pink album and come from a more “innovative” place for her next collection. Unlike her previous work, Planet Her, set to release this summer, is already being described as the first of Doja’s records that feels “fully her own.” “I think in the beginning, I was just trying to be solid and be what a pop artist already was, what I’d seen on TV, and what I thought was the right thing to do,” she says in an interview with Billboard. “But as I move on into this Planet Her-era, I want to introduce things to people as opposed to just re-create and rehashing. It’s just more inspiring to start from a more innovative spot.”

SZA, too, is teasing new music with her singles “Good Days” and “Hit Different,” but the artist still hasn’t announced any news of a new album. However, we understand that a follow-up to her debut album Ctrl will take time. The BBMAs, hosted by Nick Jonas, air Sunday night on NBC. Other performers include Alicia Keys, The Weeknd, DJ Khaled with H.E.R. and Migos, BTS, Pink, Jonas Brothers & Marshmello, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis with Sounds of Blackness, AJR, Glass Animals and Twenty One Pilots. Drake will receive the Artist of the Decade Award at the ceremony.
