As we all know, short haircuts have been all the buzz in 2021, celebrities like Bella Hadid, Zendaya and Dua Lipa have all rocked a chop in the past year. But what about those who take it a step farther with a full-on buzz cut, like Iris Law or, in this case, Demi Lovato.
The singer posted a reel on Instagram yesterday debuting a new very short and very symbolic hairstyle. They captioned the video “🖤 #freshstart,” while basking in the glory that is a freshly-shaved head.

The video was shot by celebrity photographer and director, Angelo Kritikos over FaceTime. The photographer has worked with Lovato in the past in many of their previous photoshoots and Instagram posts.
Alternative styles like a shaved head often carry with them a symbolic gesture or meaning. For Demi, it’s an homage to the possibilities of a new start as we ring in the new year. The singer has recently had a very alternative, rocker-like aesthetic in their stage presence and day-to-day looks, so a shaved head just seems like a natural next step.
Will shaved heads be a trend in 2022? It’s hard to say if the short hair that dominated 2021, due to their chic convenience and practicality, will stick around for the new year. But, if we see more celebrities rocking shaved heads as we ring in the new year, it will definitely be a trend to keep an eye out for.
