The former assistant of David Beckham, Rebecca Loos, has been—perhaps unnecessarily—weighing in on online commentary about her alleged affair with the football superstar in 2005. The scandal is of course back in the headlines amid the recent release of the rather incredible Netflix docuseries Beckham.
In it, Beckham’s wife, fashion designer and former Spice Girl Victoria, 49, reflects on that period of time as “the most unhappy I have been in my entire life.”
She also admits to internalising a lot of her sadness so her husband could keep playing his best football.
“It wasn’t that I felt unheard because I was always mindful of the focus that he needed,” she says. “It felt like the world was against us…[But] here’s the thing—we were against each other, if I’m being completely honest.”
Beckham, 48, admits he wasn’t sure the couple would make it through that time in their lives.
“Victoria is everything to me, to see her hurt was incredibly difficult, but we’re fighters,” he recalls in the docuseries. “And at that time, we needed to fight for each other, we needed to fight for our family. And what we had was worth fighting for.”
“Stay strong,” one Instagram commenter wrote to Loos on October in reference to the docuseries. “You have a beautiful life with your gorgeous family which unlike others doesn’t have to fill the gaps by getting Netflix involved!”
“Thank you,” Loos replied. “I am taking in the nasty comments with as much humour as I can.”
The pair married on July 4 1999. In 2005, while living in Madrid, they found themselves at the centre of a cheating scandal with Loos, now 46, telling British publication News Of The World that she had an affair with Beckham.
Beckham vehemently denied the allegations.
“During the past few months I have become accustomed to reading more and more ludicrous stories about my private life,” he said in a statement at the time. “What appeared this morning is just one further example. The simple truth is that I am very happily married and have a wonderful wife and two very special kids. There is nothing any third party can do to change this.”
A second woman also came forward claiming she, too, had an affair with Beckham. Irrespective of all the allegations, Victoria stood by her husband. After all, they had two young sons, Brooklyn and Romeo. They would go on to have a third son Cruz that same year, and a daughter named Harper in 2011.
Together, Victoria and David Beckham built an empire and today are estimated to be worth hundreds of millions of dollars. They have been married 24 years.
