Is there a more reliable
ally on a workday morning than a well-cut suit? Victoria
Beckham clearly thinks so, and on Friday night in Paris
she made her case with candlelight and conviction. Her spring 2027
show unfolded inside the Conciergerie, the
medieval palace where Marie Antoinette spent her final weeks. David
Beckham and their children watched from the front row. Across
forty-four looks, sheer dresses floated as if suspended in midair.
Short parkas cinched at the waist skimmed delicate slips trimmed
with pom-poms, while pleats and bows added a sweet, youthful note.
The real headline, however, came in the tailoring.
Oversized suits in green and blue arrived with
broad, padded shoulders and fluid trousers
spilling generously over the heel. Beckham wanted everything light
and breezy, and even the suits followed suit.
The Oversized Suit’s Impressive Résumé
Of course, roomy tailoring has always been a woman’s quiet power move. In 1977, Diane Keaton turned up in Annie Hall wearing borrowed menswear and a loosely knotted tie, much of it pulled from her own closet. Then, in the 1980s, Giorgio Armani unstructured the jacket and handed working women a new kind of armor.
Beckham, a longtime fan of mannish tailoring, simply turns up the volume. Her shoulders feel assertive, yet the fabrics move with remarkable lightness. As a result, the look reads powerful and relaxed at the same time. She also knows her clients want clothes that glide from a morning meeting to a late dinner, and this suit was clearly built for that journey.
How to Wear an Oversized Suit to the Office
For the office, let the shoulders lead and keep everything underneath streamlined. A fine-gauge knit or a silk camisole slips beautifully beneath the jacket. Then choose trousers long enough to brush the floor, adding a pointed heel to stretch the silhouette. Green or blue tailoring also brightens a gray Monday far more than another navy suit. Meanwhile, a roomy bag tucked under the arm, just as the models carried theirs, adds a dose of Parisian nonchalance.
After dark, trade the knit for a lace-trimmed camisole and a slim gold chain, and the same suit is ready for dinner reservations. Under the vaulted ceilings of the Conciergerie, those generous jackets looked like an invitation to take up a little more space, at the office and well beyond it.
