For adherents of Chloë Sevigny’s eclectic personal aesthetic, the actress’ off-duty ensembles are akin to a gospel determining which silhouettes are en vogue and which should be relegated to the sidelines. So, when a polarising style begins to earn the favour of the zeitgeist, Sevigny’s stamp of approval is the green light needed to make it a permanent fixture in the wardrobes of her acolytes.

Though her recent looks have swayed towards the more traditional, uptown aesthetic due to her promotion for Ryan Murphy’s Feud: Capote vs. The Swans, her latest foray is exemplary of the off-beat downtown style that put her on fashion’s map. (Albeit, her garments are more designer than bargain basement these days.)

Case in point, the unexpected shoe choice popular amongst Gen-Z that Sevigny chose to style with her winter warmers with: Ugg Boots. Specifically, fur-trimmed, calf-high Ugg Boots ripped right from the early 2000s. (See photos, here).

Once a venerable footwear choice worn by in-the-know style savants—including Beyoncé at a pre-game concert for the 2002 Super Bowl, to Kate Moss showcasing her distressed chic style by pairing it with a Balenciaga Motorcycle bag out in  London—the sheepskin shoe inevitably fell out of style as the zeitgeist shifted towards a sleek, normcore silhouette following the noughties.

Following Bella Hadid ‘plandidly’ wearing a high-top platform version of the shoe in 2022, searches for the boots rose again by a reported 152% increase, signalling a shift in the culture’s perception. So, what does that all mean for Sevigny’s co-sign?

With the indie darling styling the boots with Prada’s utilitarian buckle bag, a shearling-trimmed green military jacket and an asymmetrical skirt, is it purely a case of  Uggs returning as a practical cool-weather shoe? Or, is it further proof that Sevigny has always been one step ahead of netizen fashion aficionados? Irrespective, the outcome is clear, especially if the fervour around her ‘sale of the century’ closet cleanout is anything to go by: As it is styled, so it must be done.
