On July 27, 2021, Hedi Slimane gave us a reason to start our day a little earlier than usual. At 8 AM EST, (coffee in hand) we tuned in to the designers CELINE HOMME Summer 2022 men’s digital show set on the island of Grand Gaou in the archipelago of Embiez. Slimane’s love for motorsports continues to serve as a theme in his work. For his latest collection, professional riders from the team FMX4EVER open the show riding through the beaches of the Mediterranean island before reaching the stage where the distinctly youthful collection debuts.
Entitled Cosmic Cruiser, Slimane brings the TikTok e-boy aesthetic to new heights in a motley collection. The show begins with models taking the stage to the soundtrack of Izzy Camina’s “Up N Down.” Leather continues to hold the brand DNA throughout the first looks. Viewers are then met with sequins, Hawaiian themed ponchos, and embellished tailoring, adding to the playfully chaotic theme — all done in classic Slimane savior-faire. Punk rock influences that we’ve grown to love of Slimane-era CELINE HOMME are scattered throughout, adding wide-leg jeans and long shirts alongside minimalist silhouettes.
Slimane nails layering to a tee with sequined suits, oversized cardigans, and logo blazers. And of course, we couldn’t help but note the CELINE HOMME accessories. The return of early aughts punk leather chokers and punk harnesses with the Celine logo make their way onto the runway. A node to the rebellious teen phase we undoubtedly all went through (whether we choose to forget it or not.) Continuing its cosmic exploration of youth visor mirrored sunglasses donned some of the model’s faces adding a futuristic touch to the looks.
Throughout the madness, leave it to Slimane to make it all make sense. Slimane, has long been fascinated by the teenage years—and it’s clear he had Gen Z’ers in mind. The collection brings nostalgia for the 90s and early 2000’s youth yet fitting for today’s modern youth at the same time, truly embodies the escapism mind.
