The first picture of Cate Blanchett in the upcoming Borderlands adaptation has dropped – and has given us life.

Borderlands is a space western sci-fi video game based around first-person shooters, and Lionsgate tapped Cate and Kevin Hart to star as Lilith, a siren with magical powers, and Roland, an aloof soldier, respectively.

In the picture, we see just the outline of Cate’s Lilith walking down into what appears to be a cavernous vault.

“‘With me around, you might actually get somewhere.’ – Lilith #BorderlandsMovie,” the tweet was captioned. Lilith’s iconic hair is clearly otulined in the shadows, and although we can’t see the full outfit or her tattoos, we’re sure they’re all there for fans.

Lionsgate has promIsed this will not be a straight adaptation but instead take elements of the game and create a new world for fans; this is clear in the use of Atlas, a mega corporation in the game, now becoming a person in the film, played by Edgar Ramirez.

Jamie Lee Curtis, who will star as Tannis, a mad scientist with the loosest grip on reality, also shared the picture on Instagram and joked: “Welcome to BORDERLANDS and a secret BTS shot I took of Lilith, our legendary heroine, psycho blasting, vault hunting, vixen with a bad attitude and two Oscars to add to the baddasery in her tool belt, the once and future Queen of EVERYTHING, #cateblanchett.”

She added: “Maybe next week, if you’re nice and let them know you want MORE and they don’t fire me for posting this, I’ll post other pictures of Roland @kevinhart4real Tiny Tina @ariana_greenblatt Krieg @bignasty Claptrap @jackblack and moi, Tannis and soon you will get to see the amazing mix of adventure and badonkadonk action and comedy from the brilliant minds of @borderlandsfilm director @realeliroth and game creator Randy Pitchford and the creative teams of @gearbox @picturestart @Lionsgate.”

“So exciting!!!!! She looks great and is great in this movie,” commented Kevin, while one fan added: “Turn the lights on mama we wanna see the costume.”

Borderlands is set on the fictional planet of Pandora which was believed to be rich with minerals.

Mega corporations landed there to colonize but they found little value in the land, and native lifeforms that made it too dangerous to settle, choosing instead to leave behind former prisoners who had been coerced into working there and who are now raiders and bandits.

The film will follow vault hunter Lilith, who returns to her home planet of Pandora to find the missing daughters of Atlas. However, she is forced to team up with former mercenary Roland; Tiny Tina, a feral pre-teen demolitionist; Krieg, Tina’s musclebound, rhetorically challenged protector; Tannis (Jamie Lee Curtis); and Claptrap (Jack Black), a persistently wiseass robot.

“These unlikely heroes must battle alien monsters and dangerous bandits to find and protect the missing girl, who may hold the key to unimaginable power. The fate of the universe could be in their hands – but they’ll be fighting for something more: each other.”
