Cara Delevingne is known for her incredibly daring beauty looks, and her efforts at yesterday’s Met Gala proved no exception. Wearing a Dior haute couture look designed by the house’s creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri, the model’s white bulletproof vest featured the words ‘Peg The Patriarchy’ in red. Speaking about the tongue-in-cheek look on the cream carpet, Delevingne said, “It’s about women empowerment, gender equality… like, ‘Stick it to the man’.”

So it made sense that Delevingne’s hair and makeup would follow a similar statement-making theme. Her long, dark wet-look locks hung casually in soft waves, allowing all the focus to fall on the model’s red nails and eye makeup, in a similar hue to the scarlet slogan emblazoned across her chest.

And while we’ll admit that red eye shadow might not sound all that wearable, Delevingne’s Dior Beauty look is evidence to the contrary – with an interesting twist to the application.

Makeup artist Romy Soleimani was able to create a look that felt equal parts punk rock and pretty – although perhaps the latter would be hard to avoid with Delevingne as the canvas. “I started with the Dior Capture Totale C.E.L.L. Energy Super Potent Serum and the Dior Capture Totale Super Potent Eye Serum to hydrate and prep Cara’s skin,” she explains.

As Soleimani revealed, Delevingne’s glowing, softly sculpted complexion was actually achieved without foundation. “To create an even base, I applied the Dior Forever Skin Correct to areas where needed and then used the Dior Backstage Flash Luminizer to brighten,” she said. “Following this, I applied the Dior Backstage Contour Palette for definition and then used the Dior Backstage Glow Face Palette in Copper Gold ($45) for her glow.”

For the bold eye look, Soleimani mixed several eyeshadow and lip shades to create a custom color, including the Diorshow Mono Couleur Couture in Rouge Trafalgar ($30), the Dior Addict Lip Tattoo in Natural Red ($30), the Dior Rouge Graphist Lipstick Pencil in Crepuscule ($36), the Dior Contour Lip Liner in Favorite ($31), the Diorshow 24h Stylo Waterproof Eyeliner in Matte Brown ($33), and the Dior Backstage Glow Face Palette in Copper Gold ($45).

For the finishing touches Soleimani coated Delevingne’s lashes with the Diorshow Black Out Mascara in Khol Black ($29.50) and defined her signature arches with the Diorshow Kabuki Brow Styler ($30.50). She kept the lips simple and in tone with the eyes, with a coat of the iconic Dior Addict Lip Glow in Universal Clear ($35) to prep, before lining her lips the same Dior Contour Lip Liner in Favorite ($31) and filling them in with the Dior Addict Lip Tattoo in Natural Red ($30). A slick of gloss via the Dior Addict Lip Maximizer in the shade Cherry ($35) pulled it all together.

The lesson? Don’t sleep on your red lipstick.
