Following years of the #FreeBritney movement, the 39-year-old has finally spoken publicly on the controversial conservatorship at the hands of her father, Jamie Spears. Appearing via phone link at a Los Angeles court today, the pop star detailed the alleged abuse which included being kept in a drugged state for years. She also strongly advised that her father “should be in jail”.

In a transcript obtained and published by TMZ and The New York Times, Spears spoke of the shocking treatment. Extracts of the prepared statement are below.

“The people who did this to me should not be able to get away and walk away easily,” Spears began.

In response to a number of social media posts where Spears spoke out against a number of documentaries and the media, the singer admitted she was pretending to be okay.

“After I’ve told the whole world I’m okay, it’s a lie. I’m not happy, I can’t sleep, I’m depressed, I cry every day.”

“The same lady has been giving me my medication for 8 years… I was out on lithium,” Spears said of drug abuse. “They took me off my same drugs for 5 years and put me on lithium…it is a strong drug…it was like I was drunk.”

In addition, Spears’ conservatorship did not allow her to remove her IUD which prevented her from getting pregnant, “so I could start trying to have another baby, but this so-called team won’t let me go to the doctor to take it out because they don’t want me to have children, any more children.”

“I want to be able to get married and have a baby,” Spears added. “I was told right now in the conservatorship I am not able to get married or have a baby.”

“They should be in jail.”

“It’s embarrassing and demoralizing what I’ve been through, and that’s the main reason I didn’t say it openly,” Spears continued. “I didn’t think anybody would believe me.”

“I want to end the conservatorship without being evaluated. I want to petition to end the conservatorship.”

Spears’ public statement comes after the singer’s court-appointed lawyer, Samuel D Ingham III, filed a request to have Spears speak directly in court. It was granted by Judge Brenda Penny at the Los Angeles County Court.

Earlier today, sealed court documents were brought to light which revealed that Spears had been showing “serious opposition” against the conservatorship for many years.

A court investigator assigned to her case wrote in a 2016 report that the singer “articulated she feels the conservatorship has become an oppressive and controlling tool against her,” adding that she said the system had “too much control.”
