Blue Ivy Carter, the daughter of Beyoncé and Jay-Z has won her first accolade at just nine years of age. In the lead up to the main 2021 Grammy Awards ceremony, the Recording Academy announced a number of winners – and “Brown Skin Girl” nabbed the award for Best Music Video.

Directed by Beyoncé and Jenn Nkiru, Carter features within the film with her mother as they play clapping games in the bayou. The nine-year-old then joins a number of prominent guests including Lupita Nyong’o, Naomi Campbell, Kelly Rowland, Beyoncé’s mother Tina Knowles-Lawson, and Beyoncé’s youngest daughter, Rumi Carter.

The catchy R&B and Afrobeat track also features verses by American-Guyanese artist MC Saint Jhn who rose to widespread popularity in 2020 with “Roses” as well as Nigerian singer, Wizkid. “Brown Skin Girl” was originally released for the 2019 Disney film, The Lion King: The Gift, before being adapted for Beyoncé’s 2020 film, Black Is King.

“The events of 2020 have made the film’s vision and message even more relevant, as people across the world embark on a historic journey. We are all in search of safety and light. Many of us want change,” Beyoncé wrote on Instagram alongside the film’s debut. “I believe that when Black people tell our own stories, we can shift the axis of the world and tell our REAL history of generational wealth and richness of soul that are not told in our history books. I pray that everyone sees the beauty and resilience of our people.”

Black Is King has also been praised for its stunning fashion moments with a number of looks provided by Burberry, Valentino, Marine Serre and Balmain.

If this first Grammy Award for Blue Ivy is anything to go by, we could see a new Queen Bey in the not-too-distant future. Beyoncé is nominated for nine awards in 2021 including Song of the Year and Record of the Year.
