overnight skincare treatments

A solid morning and nighttime skincare regimen is a must, no matter who you are and how your skin looks. But besides the products you use every day (i.e., broad-spectrum sunscreen and moisturizer), it’s a good idea to occasionally use power-packed overnight skincare treatments for a little extra TLC. It doesn’t necessarily matter what it is–whether it’s an overnight mask, AHA moisturizer, or retinol serum—but that it’s what your skin needs.

The overnight skincare treatments you choose should primarily be based on your skin type, not necessarily what’s trending on social media. For example: look for a formula with lactic acid for acne control, or retinol to target lines and wrinkles. It’s good to have a few different items in your vanity to target specific concerns, depending on how your skin’s acting. Dull? Add in vitamin C. Dry? Incorporate hyaluronic acid.

Keep in mind that we all want our skincare products to work at lightning speed. But the reality is that you don’t see much of a difference with new products for at least a month. This is because it takes your skin cells about 28 days to turn over. That said, every product works differently from person to person. What makes my skin look better and brighter overnight might not work as fast for you. In short, don’t give up on a product for not noticing results right away.

SHANI DARDEN RETINOL REFORM, $115 VIA SEPHORA. SHOP NOW

“This celebrity-loved retinol and lactic acid serum is the product I always recommend to people who want to see results fast. Be careful: retinol isn’t a product to go overboard with, and you should start by using it once per week so as to not irritate your skin. I’ve been using it for over a year now, and thus, I’ve worked my way up to using it every other night. When I wake up in the morning, I’m always amazed by how smooth and radiant my skin looks. I can’t promise the same will happen for you, but hey, those five-star reviews don’t lie.” -Marisa Petrarca, Beauty and Style Editor

FRENCH ROYAL JELLY, $209 VIA FRENCH ROYAL. SHOP NOW

“French Royal Skincare is new to the United States, hailing from the Pyrénées mountains of France. There, the founders of the luxury brand met beekeepers who have ethically and sustainably been harvesting royal jelly for generations: an organic superfood produced by honeybees to feed the Queen bee. You’ve likely come across the ingredient in skincare products before, in tiny amounts that make up just a tiny fraction of the product’s composition. This one, however, is 100 percent undiluted and organic. I’ve been using it once a week at night. I apply a tiny amount of product on my skin, and I skip other products entirely. In the morning, I rinse it off to find that my skin looks firmer and my pores appear smaller.” -Marisa Petrarca, Beauty and Style Editor

REGEN DE PEAU PLATINUM, $120 VIA REGEN DE PEAU. SHOP NOW

Right now, I’m addicted to ReGen De Peau Platinum, a crème that works wonders on the entire face, eyes, neck, and decolletage. Beyond just moisturizing, it’s jam-packed full of benefits from reducing wrinkles, crepiness, and discoloration to increase firmness, cell renewal rate, and collagen production. MAELOVE NIGHT RENEWER, $27.95 VIA MAELOVE. SHOP NOW

“I love this glycolic acid cream so much that I’m reluctant to rave about it on the Internet in fear that it will go out of stock. It’s that good. It was formulated for those with sensitive skin so they, too, can experience the benefits of a chemical peel without irritation. I don’t have sensitive skin, but I use this formula on the days that I don’t use my retinol, and it’s, hands down, the best moisturizer I tried in 2020. I’m addicted to the way it makes my skin look refreshed, glowy, and smooth.” -Marisa Petrarca, Beauty and Style Editor
