Since the origin of Batsheva Hay’s eponymous label in 2016, Laura Ashley has always served as a reference for the designer’s cult-favorite cottagecore dresses. “I grew up in the ’80s in Queens, and we used to drive into Manhattan to visit the Laura Ashley store on Madison Avenue.” Hay’s adds. “Laura Ashley always symbolized my dream of femininity — natural and romantic and a little costumey.” Now, five years in, the Brooklyn-based designer is partnering with the British label for a full circle nostalgic moments.

The unlikely fashion darling came to fame in what seemed to be overnight. Hay’s earned her seat at the table as an American designer to watch when Ella Emhoff wore a custom silk dress by the designer to President Biden’s inauguration. But even before then, Hay’s voluminous shapes, high collars, exaggerated sleeves, and ruffled filled dresses caught the eyes of the fashion crowd for its fresh and youthful approach to the prairie dress.

For Batsheva, a longtime fan of Laura Ashley since the age of four (noting it was probably her first fashion memory) naturally didn’t hesitate when the brand reached out to bring the collaboration to life. “When Laura Ashley got in touch with me and asked if I would like to design a capsule. I did not have to think at all before saying. Yes,” she says. When deciding what the collection would look like, it was essential to Hays that the range was inclusive for anyone who wanted to wear it. “The prints are timeless, and there are so many shapes to suit so many different bodies, the entire collection is also offered in sizes 0-20 as well.”

The 15-piece collection marries Batsheva’s whimsy and unexpected cool thinking with Laura Ashley’s beloved nostalgia in a harmonious yet out-of-the-box mash-up. “I looked through their archival prints and picked out my favorites — some that I was familiar with, and some that I had never seen before,” says Hay’s on the design process. “Then I paired the prints with some of my existing Laura Ashley-inspired silhouettes, and some silhouettes I created from vintage Laura Ashley sketches.”

The collection includes floral patterned blouses, dresses, layered skirts, and oh so adorable matching mommy-and-me girls dresses designed to be worn together for a head-to-toe look or mixed and matched for a modern look. The line finishes with a classic apron complete with coordinating oven mitts, referencing the appreciation and fascination with a slower, country living many of us found over the past year.

The line is now available online at Batsheva.com, with select pieces offered at LauraAshleyUSA.com, among other retailers. Ahead, shop some of our favorite dresses from the Batsheva x Laura Ashley collection.
