Now we know this sounds like we just pulled names out of a hat, but it’s true, Anya Taylor-Joy, Nicole Kidman and Björk have all come together in the trailer for the Robert Eggers-directed film, The Northman. Set to release in April 2022, The Northman harkens back to the days of the vikings and Norse Mythology, with all sorts of dark aesthetics that channel dark forests, Nordic mystics and tales of revenge.

In an aesthetic we’re penning as “Pagan chic” (AKA the fashion version of folk horror), this film carries with it a star-studded cast, including the aforementioned names as well as the likes of Alexander Skarsgård, Claes Bang, Ethan Hawke and Willem Dafoe.

Shot in Northern Ireland, The Northman follows the story of “an epic revenge thriller, that explores how far a Viking prince will go to seek justice for his murdered father,” according to Focus Features.

In a sort of idiosyncratic sense, this film actually follows quite a bit of style trends that we’ve been tracking recently. This dark-ages, wintery forest sense of folk dressing acts as a sort of love child between the trends of cottagecore and dark academia with a viking twist, and we’re all for it.
