There are many reasons to be excited about the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, whether you’re lucky enough to be in France or are watching along from home, but one big reason to be watching this year’s festival closely is the promise of seeing Alicia Vikander doing what she does best.
Overnight, the Academy Award-winning Swedish actor attended a screening of Irma Vep. In the new HBO series, Vikander plays Mira, a disillusioned American movie star who heads to France to star as Irma Vep in a remake of the 1915 classic, Les Vampires. The series, which premieres on June 6, stars Tom Sturridge and comedian Byron Bowers, and is directed by Olivier Assayas, who also directed the original 1996 film of the same name. (Yes, the French director is making his own remake.)
An ambassador for Louis Vuitton, Vikander, 33, walked the red carpet in a perfectly embellished metallic dress. With a top knot, minimal accessories, nude nails, and an only-just-there smokey eye, the Louis Vuitton gown was given more than enough space to shine. And shine it did.
Before this year’s film festival, Vikander and husband Michael Fassbender hadn’t been seen on a red carpet together since March 2020, when they went to the premiere of Calm With Horses, which Fassbender directed, at the Dublin International Film Festival. Last Friday, the couple attended a Vanity Fair x Louis Vuitton dinner together and reminded the world what a sartorial blessing it is when the two step into the spotlight.
Here’s hoping this isn’t the last we see of the couple at Cannes or the last time we see Vikander stepping out in a Louis Vuitton look worth committing to memory.
