Much like Margot Robbie’s journey in the award-winning film Barbie, the Australian actress is finally ready to bid farewell to the saccharine, silicone land of dolls and enter the real world. Though Robbie will most likely reprieve Barbie’s signature pink hue for the remainder of awards season—culminating her masterful press tour with a stellar display at the 2024 Oscars—the star is no longer leaning into plastic fantastic silhouettes in her off-duty wardrobe.
Following her ‘Barbenheimer’ display at the 81st Golden Globes, the multi-hyphenate has embraced the merits of quotidian dressing instead of the cartoonish style seen on the red carpet. Stepping out in Los Angeles, the 33-year-old eschewed delivering a fashion fantasy with her wardrobe and went back to basics.
Namely, a slouchy, off-duty silhouette littered with oversized closet staples. Perhaps her time with Billie Eilish has rubbed off on her. It’s a strict departure from her typical body-conscious attire–a mode that even found its way into her downtime à la the head-to-toe business casual Bottega Veneta ensemble she wore late last year in New York.
In the outing, Robbie took cues from Barbie’s gynaecologist appointment outfit by sporting a red-and-pink striped cotton poplin shirt, baggy denim jeans and Allan-coded chunky white sneakers. Similar to the trajectory of Barbie in the Greta Gerwig-directed movie, Robbie’s return to reality was marked by minimal accessories and a demure approach to beauty. On that front, the producer wore a pair of gold-rimmed aviator sunglasses, gold hoop earrings and left her complexion au naturale.
Given that Robbie kept a relatively low profile during the SAG-AFTRA strike—with the only sightings of the star post-industrial action when she took to film premieres with aplomb—this rare insight into her personal aesthetic is telling of her sartorial state of mind. Our findings? You can take the doll out of Barbieland, but you can’t take the doll out of her.
