It appears Margot Robbie’s turn as Barbie is here to stay. Stepping out of New York’s uptown hot spot The Peninsula Hotel on November 28, the 33-year-old star of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and her producer husband Tom Ackerley had paparazzi swarming.
Styled in a Versace blazer and skirt combo, pumps and the House’s crystal La Medusa Mini Bag by stylist Andrew Mukamal, Robbie was all smiles, her pink ensemble a stark contrast to the flank of black-suited security guards behind her. Mukamal created a Barbie-sized splash on the world press tour earlier in the year by diving deep into the storied Barbie archives, and then enlisting Versace, Chanel, Moschino, and Hervé Léger to recreate the famous doll’s minis and pantsuits. Our favourite? These Versace numbers for a day and night press engagements in Seoul. Or maybe it was this custom Schiaparelli which paid homage to “Solo In The Spotlight” Barbie, a Mattel creation from 1960.
Robbie and Ackerley attended the Gotham Awards in the city’s Financial District on November 27, where the actress’ Mukamel-styled Prada outfit was a direct reference to the “Black Magic Ensemble” Barbie from 1964. Barbie writer-director Greta Gerwig and star producer Robbie took home the Global Icon & Creator Icon award.
“Four years ago, I asked Greta to come and write Barbie with me,” said Robbie on stage. According to her, Gerwig and her husband and co-writer Noah Baumbach “took an object — a doll with no character or story — and cooked up the most ridiculous, outrageous, bananas script in an attempt to conjure back what they loved about the movies.”
Barbie went on to be highest-grossing release of the year making USD $1.4 billion (AUD $2.1 billion) globally at the international box office.
Yes, the Barbie tour may have ended, but don’t think Robbie has stopped serving looks. Perhaps it might be one of those characters who stays with her forever. Forever a Barbie girl.
